Schumer Says: 'Why quibble over $200 MILLION?'

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) accused Senate Republicans Monday of dragging their feet on the $800 billion stimulus package.

“Why quibble over $200 million?” he asked during an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Schumer blamed Republicans for not meeting Democrats halfway in making a compromise.

“The two biggest amendments in the Senate, one totaling $70 billion, one totaling $30 billion, were offered by Republicans and accepted by Democrats. We voted for them,” Schumer said. “They voted against the bill. I mean, what do you want us to do?”

“As for bipartisanship, you know, we’re trying,” he added.

The Democrat warned that delaying the stimulus could prove disastrous for a country “on the edge of getting into a depression.”

“If we waited too long and we’re in a depression, you can be sure on this show and the historians would say, ‘what did they dither for?’” he said.

Despite the sense of urgency, Schumer said the Senate is getting hung up on partisan battles stemming from ‘mistrust’ rather than substantive differences.

“There’s a lot of mistrust, frankly, on both sides of the aisle,” he said. “There’s been huge partisanship.”
